Getting listed by search engines

The most important starting point is to make sure that your pages have relevant words in the text that people might search for when looking for your kind of content. As well as the text visible on the page itself you should set 'Title', 'Description' and 'Keyword' data for your page using your authoring tool.

There are a number of approaches to getting your pages listed / noticed:

  1. Do nothing - sounds odd, but most search engines will eventually pick up the fact that you are there and you will go up the ‘rankings’ as more people also link to you from other sites. Not really advisable though.
  2. Self-submit to major engines - Visit various pages on google, yahoo, MSN dmoz (open directory project) and others. A good starting point is the ‘Submit page’ column of the chart at http://www.pandia.com/optimization/submit-site.html
  3. Use a bulk submission service such as www.ineedhits.com starts as low as $1.87 though a more expensive version with a human being involved to see that it makes sense may be worth paying for -

  4. Go the whole hog and employ an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) company. Generally quite expensive and may not be worth the additional costs involved unless you have a very specific brief that they can meet.
It is worth self-submitting to Yahoo and dmoz as well as Google and msn as a minimum.

It is worth having an understanding of the issues that help to get your site noticed as listing is only half the story. Special pages for search engines to help find content on your site can be built, indexing information about your site can be prepared specifically to help Google, and there are a range of other strategies you can consider.
See Searchenginewatch for an article about this.

Another good site to look at is seomoz. Specifically they have an Introduction to SEO and a page on Search Engine Ranking Factors. Also take a look at the very clear words of Chris Coyier.
